Memorial Fund Graduate Student Travel Grant Award.

The award is made from the interest generated on the Memorial Fund Account. The money is to be used to support the academic or research development of a graduate student within the Potomac Division member institutions. The award may be used, for example, to support travel to an international or national meeting, symposium, or workshop; or to support travel and lodging to gain specific research experience in a laboratory outside of the student's institution and geographic location.

Criteria for the Memorial Fund Student Travel Grant are as follows:

  1. be a member of the Potomac Division at the time of application;
  2. be officially enrolled in a Masters or Ph.D. program at a Potomac Division academic institution at time of application;
  3. submit a proposal to the selection committee that demonstrates a compelling academic and/or re-search need by the candidate for the experience, travel, or training;
  4. use the award within 12 months of receiving the money from the Potomac Division Representative or at the Potomac Division Annual Meeting.

Selection of this award will be based solely on scientific merit and will be judged by a committee representing the graduate institutions and federal agencies within the Potomac Division. The value of the award will be an amount not to exceed $400. Applications must be received by ____ and be sent to:

  • Applications for this award must include the following:

    1. A request detailing the particular meeting, symposium, workshop, etc. involved;
    2. A one-page justification of how this specific travel will benefit your academic/research development;
    3. A letter of recommendation from your major advisor affirming your request and detailing the benefit;
    4. A letter of recommendation from another faculty member familiar with the student's program;
    5. A short vita detailing the student's academic and research experiences.
