The Year 2000 Potomac Division meeting will be held:

This is the updated text of the first mail announcement. The first meeting of the new Millennium promises to be very exciting and informative, and the program committee has organized special sessions around a central theme:

"Controlling Plant Diseases Through Genetic Manipulation and Genetically Modified Organisms"

Hotels. Two hotels that are giving us a conference rate are:

Holiday Inn (302- 737-2700) at Rt. 273 and I-95. Room rate is $71 plus 8% tax. The Holiday Inn has an attached restaurant and lounge and is newly renovated. This hotel will hold a block of rooms until 30 days before the Meeting.

Sleep Inn (302 453- 1700) on Rt 896. Room rate is is $63 plus 8% tax. Will hold a block of rooms until 14 days before the meeting.

There is a MacIntosh Motor Inn almost next to the Holiday Inn that might be attractive to those on a budget like grad students, rates are $48 for a queen-sized bed, single occupancy, or $60 for double occupancy with 2 double-beds. A Denny's restaurant is next to the MacIntosh. 302-453-9100. Newly renovated and free continental breakfeast.

Contributed papers, posters, and abstracts. The deadline for receipt of titles for contributed papers and posters was Feb 15, 2000. Posters are encouraged. Titles may be e-mailed (preferred), mailed, or faxed to Anton Baudoin. Information needed:

Abstracts for contributed papers are optional. Abstracts that are received by March 3 will be made available at the meeting. Each abstract submitted should be on a Division Abstract Form AND on a diskette, and must conform to the instructions enclosed (also available on APSNet at http://www.scisoc.org/meetings/divabstr/instruct.htm . An abstract form is enclosed, and is also available here:

The original of the abstract plus a check for $30.00 are required. Organizations sending multiple abstracts are encouraged to collect and send all abstracts in one unit. Make checks payable to POTOMAC DIVISION, APS. Abstracts not accompanied by the $30.00 fee will not be published in Phytopathology. Abstracts submitted too late for inclusion on the abstract booklet will be published on APSNet and in Phytopathology as long as they are submitted by the time of the meeting.

Graduate Student Paper Competition. A first and second place award of $250 and $100, respectively, is available. To be eligible for this competition you must: 1) be a member of the Potomac Division; 2) have been a graduate student in an accredited graduate school at the time the research was done; 3) present the research no later than one year following receipt of the graduate degree; 4) be the sole or senior author and the only student author under consideration for the award; 5) submit the title by February 15 and abstract by March 3.

Call for Nominations. Please submit nominations for Vice-President (1-year term, advances to President and IPP), Secretary-Treasurer (3-year term) and for the annual Distinguished Service Award. Listings of current and past officers and Distinguished Service Award recipients may be found on the website. The Distinguished Service Award will be presented during the annual meeting banquet. Please take some time to think about colleagues who are worthy of recognition, and then take a little more time to submit a nomination. A Vice President will be elected for the term that begins after the annual meeting in 2000. Nominations Committee Chair Nikki O'Neill must receive nominations (clearly identifying office, nominee, as well as nominator) via mail, fax or e-mail by Feb 15 to consider your nominations.

Memorial Fund Graduate Student Travel Grant Award. The award is make from the interest generated on the Memorial Fund Account. The money is to be used to support the academic or research development of a graduate student within the Potomac Division member institutions. The award may be used, for example, to support travel to an international or national meeting, symposium, or workshop; or to support travel and lodging to gain specific research experience in a laboratory outside of the student's institution and geographic location.
