Jody's Notes - Thoughts and Information

Best of the Best Plant List - These plants are our favorite species to use on the roadside and home landscapes. These plants are adapted to a wide range of soil and cultural conditions.

Birds- Many roadside flowers and native grasses attract wildlife, especially birds. We have provided a list of roadside plants that produce seeds that birds like to eat: Ornamental Roadside Flowers for Birds , Non-ornamentals for Birds, Grasses for Birds and Weeds for Birds. Hummingbirds are attracted to some roadside flowers.

Deer: Browse Resistant Plants - Many gardeners as well as roadside managers have observed deer damage to our plants. The response is usually marked with disgust. The browse resistant Deer List will help, but even these plants will fall victim occasionally.

Dormant Seeding - This is the time of the year for seeding both roadside flowers and native grasses individually or as a mixture. This technique is called "Dormant Seeding".

YMCA Meadow Gardening Short Course - For those who attended the two day course, I have posted the class notes on this site. Hopefully this information will help. Spring 2007 Class Notes.

Journal - The Native Plants Journal, a practical guide for planting and growing native plants, can be subscribed to at this site: http://nativeplants.for.uidaho.edu or call 800-847-7377 or nativeplants@uidaho.edu.

Weather - For more climate information for Virginia link to the Virginia Climate Site.
